If second hand smoke is so harmful for humans, does it affect animals in the same way? If not, why doesn't it? My mom smokes like a chimney and we have a cat, so I was just curious as to whether the smoke affects animals...?

Alright, folks, lets get ready for an old fashioned debate...
Now, I'm a smoker. I've been smoking for three and one half years and I have regular doctors examinations, I am also physically active, and nutritionally fulfilled. I have experienced no ill effects from smoking at all. Second hand smoke has been a hot topic on Yahoo answers for some time, and I'm here to debunk it. First of all, the fact that second hand smoke is worse than mainstream smoke, because the smoker has the advantage of a filter. Okay then..well, a filter is merely a cotton or acrylic blend stuffed in a paper wrapper. The cotton does trap some of the tar, but the way a filter works is by DILLUTING THE SMOKE. If any of you have ever touched a cigarette, you might notice several tiny holes in the filter. You draw in smoke through the filter, as well as air. The air dillutes the smoke, and therefore makes it less "harmful". Second hand smoke is merely ultra dilluted smoke in the air, it should never cause any harm!
Also, do you really consider cigarettes that bad when you drive around in tank-like SUV's which bellow thick noxious exhaust into the atmosphere, which is clearly more harmful than a cigarette! It only takes 20 minutes for you to die from breathing in constant exhaust. I've spent an hour in a room full of smokers, one of which was myself, and I'm here alive to tell about it! IF you think BANNING smoking all together is a good idea, think about prohibition. Did it work? No, it brought crime rates soaring to new highs, people died from drinking home made alcohol, illegal bootlegging became rampant! The war on drugs is also a new failure, what do you think? Banning smoking outdoors is rediculous, banning smoking in cars, which are personally owned and paid for is also just as vile. We smokers have rights, just as any other non smoker does. Show some common sense, if it bothers you, leave, or take it like a human being. Take it or leave it, I say. And remember, smokers can smell fear...
Sure, you can lead a lifestyle of constant vitamins and diets that taste bad. And you'll die old and your life will be unfulfilled. I'll bet having grand children gets pretty boring after a while, anyway. In reality, we all are dying at this very moment. Cigarettes or not, we're going to cease living someday, anyday. You complain about the guy who died at 50 from lung cancer, but not about the 20 year old who was hit by a bus. Smoking gives you pleasure, no matter how you put it. Nicotine is a natural uplifting chemical, and you really do feel good. If you want to live a happy life, drink responsibly and smoke till you're content. Eat red meat and have sex. Drive your H2 and live a little!
I respect anyone's choices, whether they wish to smoke or not, I will respect it and be civil. This issue has spun out of control! People die from lung cancer all the time, and it will have nothing to do with smoking. It's impossible to prove that smoking reduces your life expectancy by 7 minutes, medical technology is not that advanced. Unless the government has a time machine that they want to keep secret from us. By the way, I've seen it, it's called TimeWise by Mary Kay. An anti-aging moisture crea--anyway...smoking has been around for hundreds of years, and it's never going to go away. Unless you ban sex, alcohol (tried it, didn't work), automobiles, sun exposure, salt, nuclear technology, cell phones, microwaves, and LIFE itself. We all day, which means that LIFE kills us!! We cant do anything that will kill us, regardless of the pleasure it brings and regardless of personal choice! Live forever? Satanist!

If you choose not to breathe in our smoke, do not whine about it and try to get legislation passed. Step several paces away and breathe the air you deem *clean*, when it's actually worse to breathe than the air in your own home.
Asking why you should breathe the smoke is like asking why you should breathe at all. With car exhaust, fragrances, propellants, Co2, trace fecal matter, radiation, and other nasty stuff in the air we breathe 20,000 times per day (true fact), should you even worry about breathing in a tiny bit of smoke once a week?
